NTR 109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Fruit Preserves, Food Miles, Land Degradation
Document Summary
Sustainability: the production of food, plants & animal products by using farming techniques that protect the environment, the public, the community & animal welfare. Sustainable food systems are imperative to feed the growing population and limit the effects of climate change. How food is produced, grown & what types of foods are consumed & food waste will all impact the world"s food systems. Food insecurity: unreliable access to a sufficient supply of nourishing food. Those living in rural area have higher incidence. About 17. 4 million u. s. households (roughly 14%) experienced food insecurity in 2011. About 6. 8 million households experienced very low food security - eating patterns were disrupted & food intake was reduced. Those at higher risk are households with lower incomes. Goal increase worldwide food production to meet increasing post war population. Developed fertilizers, pesticides and farming techniques - boosted food production. Raised cattle, chickens and pigs - large, confined farms.
