740 billion costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care money also isn"t being made due to addictions. Addicts what to quit feel like they can"t/don"t know how. Motivational interviewing tries to capitalize on this. Addicts have compromised decision making and autonomy. It"s difficult for them to recognize they should abstain. It would be great to alleviate the costs of addiction, but we can"t leave it up to the addicts themselves. Success rate for aa not that high, relapse rates are very high. Aa = good program, good support, 12 step programs only reduce use, not terminate use only increase stents of sobriety. Coercion on a continuum societal/familial customs can be coercive. You can be shunned, twitter shamed etc. Certain behaviors/actions etc. are forbidden under threat of harm. *there are coercive norms and institutions that are normalized by society. Given ultimatums, cut off from family, money, etc. Aots: mandated commitment to outpatient tx program (kendra"s law)
