Document Summary
Distinctive buddhist ideas: no self (anatman, all the problems of how the self is related to the reality vanish if there is no self. Arguments for anatman: a chariot seems to be one thing. It is really only a composition of various parts: the parts change over time as they wear out, the parts of the self (skandhas, physical parts, feelings and moods, likes and dislikes, goals in life, ideas about life. Mahayana: great vehicle later development, goal is the bodhisattva committed to lead all beings to absolute nirvana. There are no things: nagarjuna, there are absolutely no things, nowhere and none that arise, the no-self doctrine of dependence of one state on another is extended to things. What type of dependence: not a theory of causal connections between things, cause and effect have distinct being, but logical or conceptual interdependence, relatives in a family, argument: subtsances would have to be either.
