From experiment from last notes: men and women both shocked the same amount. Prejudice (pre- judging): negative (or positive) attitudes or affect towards members of specific social groups. Stereotype: set of beliefs and expectations about members of a social group. This is the cognitive component of the term prejudice. Discrimination: negative (or sometimes positive) actions taken toward members of a social group. Easiest to see out of these three terms. Social categorization: classifying people according to particular characteristics, stereotypes begin with social categorization, person schemas- from earlier chapter, view person through certain lens. Realistic conflict theory: prejudice stems from competition among groups over valued resources, classic study- robber"s cave, competition leads to prejudice. Prejudice best understood through a variety of approaches. Contact hypothesis: idea that people are prejudice against others who they don"t know. Not always the case: equal status must be present in situation, sustained close contact, intergroup cooperation, equality based social norms.
