10% are binge drinkers (5+ drinks at once) Adults age 25-44 have highest rates of drinking: men are more likely to drink than women. People with more education are more likely to drink. However, hs dropouts are more likely to develop drinking problems. Alcohol is metabolized by 2 enzymes: alcohol dehydrogenase & aldehyde dehydrogenase. This process lactic acid (correlated w. anxiety attacks), uric acid (related to gout), & fat in the liver & blood. Tolerance: when more & more of the drug is needed to produce the same effect. Dependence: body needs drug for normal functioning: withdrawal: when drug is discontinued; alcohol withdrawal is serious and can be deadly. Addiction: definitions vary; combination of dependence and withdrawal. Direct hazards: harmful physical effect of alcohol itself. Cardiovascular system - heavy drinking related to heart disease and stroke. Cancers of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, colon, rectum, liver, breast. Indirect hazards: consequences resulting from psychological & physiological impairments produced by alcohol.
