Hearing what the body feels: auditory encoding of rhythmic movement - phillips-silver & trainor (2007) Music vestibular system: the sensory system that provides the primary contribution to the sense of balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordinating movement with balance. Metrical structure movement: a pattern of beats in a musical piece, which consists of meter, tempo, and other rhythmic aspects. Movement and music are linked to one another. In prior research it was found music rhythm activates motor areas in the brain and influences movement and the movement can enhance listening. Infants" preference for duple (beats grouped in 2s) or triple (grouped in 3s) depended on how they were bounced (phillips-silver & trainor, 2005) **how we move may influence what we hear. 8 college students were exposed to a training phase where they were provided 8 test trials. 100% of the participants had recreational music backgrounds and 50% had recreational dance backgrounds.
