Auguste comte: coined the term sociology, believed society could be studied scientifically this approach is known as positivism-empirical observation discover under law of human behavior. Industrialization: labor: herbert spencer and social darwinism: focus on sociology from origin is wide scale. Urbanization : from countryside to city: social disorder, survival of the fittest. Spencer claimed that social adjustment is a process of social evolution: Spencer"s phrase the survival of the fittest predated darwins. Both individual and societies compete and adapt to social changes brought on by technological innovation. Some win, others become extinct: anti government individualism. Spencer argued for minimal state intervention and regulation in addressing social problems. Government regulation and social reforms should not interfere with man"s continued adaptation to society for spencer, intervention was viewed as a tragically misguided mistake. Those who could not adopt to society"s changing conditions for one reason or another were unfit and should be left to perish.
