Sign has two connected components: the level of expression , like the bare acoustic impression of speech sounds or the visual impression of written marks and images, such as words is called signifier. The level of content or value, what is associated with the signifier in a language is called signified. The notion of the sign is particularly useful for visual language, obvious examples of sign other than words are road signs, signs at airports, or sign on car dashboards. These can all be understood by people who do not share a common language but who do share an agreed understanding of what these visual signs or signifiers mean. A sign may be a word, like tree it can be a gesture. Sign can have denotation and connotation of meaning is the same way as word to. A symbolic message is one whose meaning is derived from a pre-existing social convention in order to be understandable.
