BIOL 1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Beta Sheet, Alpha Helix, Red Blood Cell
Document Summary
What constitutes a life form? cell is basic unit of life: unit of cytoplasm-watery enviroment, bounded by plasma membrane, barrier within cytoplasm, capable of replication with modification. Different kinds of cells in human body, example neuron, red blood cell. Water in liquid state ions: na+ sodium, ca +++ calcium, cl- chloride. Basic organic molecules, meaning they are made with carbon: small organic complexes, complex organic molecules, macromolecular complexes. Fatty acids- hydrocarbons with carboxyl group at end. Nucleotides- 5 carbon sugar with phosphate group attached and nitrogenous base. Small organic complexes- shuttles utilized for specific functions. Atp- stores energy in bonds and shuttles energy. Co-enzymes- bring something to a reaction or take something away: nad. Vitamen- organic molecules that are essential for life but cannot be made by body. Protein- discrete chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds(polypeptide) Functions: channel complexes in membranes, receptors, gene regulatory proteins, structural proteins, amino acids can serve as an energy source.
