Give description and draw conclusions about what the artifacts mean in terms of society, every day life, spirituality, etc. We are seeing only how the elite lived because these artifacts came from their graves. Carvings come from 1 rocks and can take over a year of everyday work to complete. Objects are all burial goods found in graves. Bleeding: bled onto drop cloth, set cloth on fire to communicate with ancestors, women cut a hole in tongue with sting ray spine, men cut penis, showed status and power by communicating with ancestors. Deformed forehead: elite, strapped kid to boards for 2 years to make flat forehead and head grow up, showed signs up wealth and power. Beheadings: when someone is beheaded and their body is left exposed to the elements, the skin pulls back and teeth show in a grimace. Birth defects and twins: viewed as sacred, siamese twins (uniqueness)
