Document Summary

The theory of evolution doesn"t just include the idea of phyletic evolution, that species arise from an ancestral form. Wallace arrived at his ideas about natural selection fairly quickly, and darwin freaked out because wallace had beat him to it. Scientific method: observation, problem or research question, developing hypothesis, collect data/experimentation, eventually, theory building. Scientific theory: an explanation or general principle that successfully accounts for a broad, integrative complex of phenomenon, a theory must account for all of the data and evidence, and be supported by the evidence. If the evidence contradicts the theory, the theory must be revised to account the new evidence or discarded: scientific theories continue to undergo modification and fine-tuning as new information is obtained through continued scientific research. Isolated and small: so can study processes too complex on mainland. Evolution works at different rates: no dilution of effects in selection and mutation. But also more vulnerable to habitat change and extinction.
