PSYC 2031 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Peripheral Nervous System, Neuroglia, Cognitive Neuroscience
Document Summary
Cognitive neuroscience is the study of how brains produce complex thoughts and behavior. It is the relationship between the brain and behavior. The 2 aims of cog neuro: to understand normal intact cognitive processes, to understand what"s happening when something goes awry. Neurons are cells that carry information form one place to another. Glia cells serve as support cells, they do not convey information like neurons. Synapse is the space between the neurons: dendritic tree/dendrites receive the input from other cells. Each neuron can come in different shapes and sizes, very diverse structures. Many neurons communicate to the same cell, it is not completely linear to send information. Glia cells: don"t carry information like neurons do, but have many functions, modify the environment for neurons, remove dead neurons, they can myelinate axons, help maintain blood brain barrier. Gray matter and white matter: white matter is myelination from glial cells.
