Stereotype -- a belief that certain traits are (not) associated with members of a certain group. Prejudice -- a feeling or attitude toward members of a group based on group membership. Bryant, 2003: gender stereotypes have declined but kept at the same level for a while. Automatic association: most people hold on to implicit stereotypes. Benevolent sexism - appears subjectively positive: hostile sexism - negative attitude toward women often about them trying to control men. Among a sample of yale science faculty, female applicants were rated as less competent, less hireable, and less capable of mentoring than male applicants. Perpetuation of gender bias: men are placed in the front in english sentences, men are placed in the far left in images. Stereotypes inform prejudice (attitudes) and discrimination (behavior: gender stereotypes are present and persistent; their reduction has leveled off, gender discrimination has major implications for women in particular. Subtyping model - people are counter stereotypical are separate from the group.
