SOCI 1810 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Hidden Curriculum, Credentialism And Educational Inflation
Document Summary
Socialization (the hidden curriculum= dress codes, paying attention, standing for the pledge, etc. ) Sort people for a variety of reasons and in a variety of ways: ap vs. standard classes, age groups, gender, grades, non troubled vs. troubled, public vs. private schools. Finds: amount of resources put into schools doesn"t change outcomes of achievement gap between black and white students. Peers with whom the student attends school- black children in a majority white school tend to do better and poor kids do better in middle class schools. Private schools also give students upward mobility, even if they weren"t born wealthy. Catholic schools generally have more successful outcomes because they run on less government money and cultural policies in place. Credentialism (the issue is that jobs are not guaranteed just because you have a degree) Finds students who couldn"t afford to get into college but were qualified (original purpose) Better predictor for 1st year of college is high school performance (gpa)
