In aphra behn"s oroonoko: the royal slave, prince oroonoko is the last descendant of the royal line of coramantien, a warlike nation that is an active participant in the trans-atlantic slave trade. Oroonoko has numerous slaves to present to imoinda, the daughter of the previous general, as a result of recent conquests in battle. After the two meet, they quickly fall in love and their tragic romance begins. When imoinda is first introduced to the audience, she is portrayed as the fair queen of night who is the female to the noble male; the beautiful black venus to our young mars (behn 155). With such an introduction, it seems like her beauty is integral to the plot. In a way, it is because it inspires oroonoko"s devotion to her to such an extent that he swears that imoinda will be the only women he will marry.
