Document Summary

The molecules of life: the chemistry of life in water. A substance that cannot be broken down to other substances by chemical reactions. Chemical reactions and structures are determined by characteristics of atoms. In a normal atom, # electrons = # protons. The behavior and distribution of electrons in atoms is the basis for chemistry. They"re organized in shells, biology deals with the first 2 shells. Shells can have multiple orbitals up to 4. Noble elements doesn"t need anything, no unpaired electrons. A compound is made up of two or more interacting atoms. A bond in a molecule represents the sharing between two electrons. Because water (and other compounds) is bent is critical to how they work. The bonds between atoms in molecules can be of different types, with different properties. Increases from bottom to top and left to right. More electronegative you are, the better you are at holding on to electrons.
