BSCI 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Myosin Light-Chain Kinase, Skeletal Muscle, Myocyte
Document Summary
Finish up smooth muscle, specific joints 10/4/2016 4:37:00 am filaments run diagonally and crisscross each other. Contraction disperses via gap junctions between cells. Maintains same contractile force as skeletal muscle for much longer. Therefore, burns less atp for same amount of contraction. Makes atp via aerobic activity: enough to sustain smooth muscle tone constantly. Smooth muscles responds to stretch and shape change. Hormonal/local chemical regulation: no neural input no action potential, hormones/ other chemicals control ca2+ levels, specific to organ needs/ function. Ex: eating stomach distension activates stretch receptors in stomach gastrin released causes stomach smooth muscle to contract fuse to make skeletal muscle. Don"t fuse to make cardiac and smooth muscle. Regeneration: cell division to replace damaged/ destroyed cells. Skeletal muscles don"t divide once made: satellite cells help with repair of skeletal muscles, declines with age. Cardiac muscles have limited cell division for repair.
