Document Summary

Lecture 4: the origins and evolution of life. Cosmos formed 15 bya, earth formed 4. 5 bya. Multicellular organisms about 1 bya compled 550 mya. Luca-universal genetic code, ribosomal rna, translates mrna to proteins, atp synthase, dna transcription, cell membrane, unbranched lipids. Bacteria- peptidoglycan cell wall, dna replications vs. 1 formethyliene. Problems: earliest steps in evolution cannot be observed, simplest life forms today are more complex. Necessities for life: metabolism- breaking down energy, preforming work, reproduction, cell to contain genetic information. Reproduction and information: an organism can"t evolve w/o a way to pass on information, w/o, organisms change randomly, store information on how to interact/survive, pass information from one generation/ cell to another, central dogma. Dna rna nucleotides: present at the root of the tree, genetic code does very in few cases, does not change shared ancestry, not everything follows central dogma. Information system: stability- consistency of information, fidelity- accuracy of information, redundancy, entropy.
