Document Summary
Lecture 2 meiosis, basic principles of transmission genetics. Meiosis is a key process in the sexual transmission of genes. We will use it as the starting point for learning fundamental genetic principles. Often these principles are taught by recapitulating the observations of a 19th century cleric (gregor mendel) who discovered these genetic principles without knowing anything about chromosomes or meiosis. While this historical approach to teaching genetics has some appeal, the concepts are more important than the history. So, we will take the quickest and easiest route possible to these concepts. There are 3 important concepts from which we can build a rather sophisticated knowledge of genetics. Our understanding of meiosis will allow us to appreciate why sex was a great invention from a biological perspective. Our study of genetics will give us a deeper appreciation of this fact. Sex gives us a tremendous source of genetic variation. Genetic variation is key to the survival of species.
