Emerging ield of biology that aims to design and build novel biological systems. Looks to modify biological funcion in exising model organisms. Generate novel organisms with speciic tailored properies. Construcion of new biological parts or redesign of exising natural biological systems for useful purposes. Sequences of dna that encode for a biological funcion (promoters or protein coding sequences: at simplest, biological parts are single funcional unites- cannot be divided into smaller funcional parts. Can be assembled into devices and ulimately circuits that operate in model organisms. Cellular funcions such as signal transmission are carried out by modules made up of many species of interacing molecules. Understanding how modules work has depended on combining phenomenological analysis with molecular studies. Modules are basic units or organizaion of biological parts toachieve a funcion. First syntheic genic circuits: geneic toggle swich- by puing together elements- speciic funcions can be achieved.
