COMM 324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Kinesics
Document Summary
Nonverbal = all elements of comm other than words. Nv behaviors 65-90% of the total meaning of comm. Everything aside from the content of the words you"re saying = nonverbal. Men and women use to present themselves as gendered people. Artifacts-personal objects that can reflect gender, express identity and influence how we see ourselves (makeup, clothes) Proxemics-the use of space, offers insight into power and status accorded to groups in society (men sit at head of the table, have own study room, etc. ) Territoriality-personal space (men go into women"s spaces more than women enter men"s) Women more likely to accept invasion and cede territory. Difference between average male and average female pitch exceeds physiological explanations. In many ways, it is a learned cultural activity. Ex: women answers to questions often have the inflection of the question while men typically answer as a declarative statement. Women use higher pitch, softer volume, more inflection.
