Currie (1997, 1998: harsh capitalism is the problem, pursuit of money is the organizing principle of the social fabric, market principles not restricted in economic institutions, sink or swim culture of competitive consumerism. Social institutions: one of few industrialized nations w/o paid maternity leave, 30th place to be a mother, 26th/29th in child wellbeing, #1 on gdp, domestic market size index. Cultural deviance theories claim that lower-class people have a different set of values, which tend to conflict with the values of the middle class. Delinquent subcultures: a rise among certain segments of society: sets of antisocial norms, values, and expectations. Cohen"s (1955) delinquent boys: status and psychic satisfaction for lower-class boys, status frustration, school failure causes strain. Biased educational system disadvantages lower class youth. Boredom and perceptions of education as a waste of time: non-utilitarian delinquency, delinquent conduct is right by the standards of his subculture precisely because it"s wrong by the norms and values of the larger culture.
