Ocean uses - aesthetic, fishing, tourism, recreation, shipping, energy development (biggest), national security, human settlement, hydrological cycle, weather and climate, producer of oxygen, carbon sink, diversity of life. 1972 - coastal zone management act, marine mammal protection act, marine protection, research and sanctuaries act. Obama wanted to help trade, recreation, animals, security, pollution, climate change. Trump focuses on industry and energy, national security. Policy challenges - pollution/marine debris, habitat loss and degradation, threatened and endangered species, overfishing, climate change, ocean acidification. Causes of ocean pollution - ships, farms, sewage treatment plants, urban runoff storm water, oil and gas exploration and production, waste, atmospheric deposition, noise. Effects of ocean pollution - habs an excess of nutrients in the water which takes away oxygen.
