56 million of which live in poverty. 1/3 of the population lives in a favela. 1/6 of the population does not have access to sewage, electricity, or running water. The average favela has about 160,000 inhabitants. A favela consists of: squatters, self-help construction due to the, lack of government aid and services. Foreign industries force smaller farmers to find work in rio de janeiro or s o paulo. Due to extremely high property values of the land in the big cities, these migrants form favelas along the outskirts of the cities and upon mountainsides. Mountain sides are not suitable or wanted. His election in 2002 was considered the high point of leftist in latin america. He is so popular that can win without a runoff with a 51% approval. He encouraged brazil to renege on its foreign debt, pointing at the imf as one of the nation"s enemies.
