Words are not put together randomly to create phrases, clauses, and sentences: syntax includes. Sentences= a string of characters over some alphabet. Lexeme = the lowest level syntactical unit of a language. Token= category of lexemes (identifiers: people apply the rules of their language automatically and without recognizing they are doing something special. Unless creating explicit grammar (consciously aware), it cant be changed. Linguistics are interested in describing the subconscious knowledge that people possess about the syntax of their language not how they should construct a sentence: linguistics aim to discover: Descriptive syntax or grammar: listen to what people actually say and then attempt to discover the rules of the syntax spoken, written, or signed languages and describe them.
