New york, 1777: free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship to all mankind. The northwest ordinance, adopted by the continental congress, 1787: guarantees of freedom of worship and belief extended into territories north of ohio river, federal constitution (1787) and the bill of rights (1791) outlawed religious tests. Jews in america gained their religious rights as individuals, not as a group. The organizational structure of the american jewish communities was not hierarchical. This trend continued to dominate american jewish life. When the new mill street synagogue was built (1818) the number of seats for women increased from 65 to 133. At the dedication of the mill street synagogue and philadelphia"s mikveh. Israel women sang in a mixed gender choir: women gained visibility in the synagogue, women wanted religious expression. The model of the synagogue- community was challenged by the younger generation.
