The penny press: ascendance of news, opinion, crusading. Harold"s editor made the newspaper more sensationalized. First became an editorial assistant at the charleston courier. Then moved to ny and joined the enquirer where he supported jackson. Developed a style that mixed stories with analysis. When the paper began to oppose jackson, bennett resigned. Launched his own penny newspaper the new york herald. Made is stories interesting and enjoyable to read. Hired the largest corps of reporters and correspondents of any newspaper in the country. Large and important figure in the expansion of the press and drew more readers in. Covered a lot of gossip and scandals. Had two barrels and a piece of wood on top of his desk when he first started out. Not clear if he would succeed but he turns the herald into the paper with the largest circulation in that time. Always defended his cause no matter how unpopular.
