Document Summary

Lecture #15: effects of physical activity on glucose and insulin metabolism. 24 million people in the us with diabetes. Health care costs = billion men. Normal glucose and insulin at fasting and during ogtt. Some insulin resistance - normal fasting, glucose & insulin, normal. More insulin resistance normal fasting glucose, increase fasting insulin, and increase ogtt glucose and insulin. More insulin resistance high fasting and ogtt glucose, now insulin levels start to decrease. Full-blown niddm high fasting and ogtt glucose, low insulin levels. Glucose tolerance in young and older athletes and sedentary. Master athletes: training length = 11 years, 33 miles running/wk. Young athletes: 5 years training, 30 miles running/wk. Young untrained, older untrained, older untrained lean groups also studied. Results: old untrained lean, and old untrained had higher insulin resistance. Study design: 21 middle to older aged men, all cardiac rehabilitation patients, screening ogtt. 8 had high normal glucose values: 12 months of exercise training.
