KNES 287 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Scientific Racism, Carl Linnaeus, Phenotype
Document Summary
Module 2 topic d: raced bodies, racisms, and sport. Theme 1: the compelling myth of race and racial difference. The intersection between social class and race (ethnicity): people of different races were given amounts of authority, and the way that they were treated had a direct correlation to it. The illusion, mythology, yet social consequences of race and racial difference: race is not something that is naturally based. Instead, it is cultural and ethnic categories that were formed through historical contexts. People tend to associate physical, psychological, and social phenotypical (examples of phenotypes are skin color, hair texture, and facial structure) differences. People will attribute meanings for these phenotypic differences and will treat people differently because of it. Race as a social construct: we all come from africa originally. Phenotypes came about because people"s bodies were adapting to local environmental conditions. Over many years, an increased mixing of racial groupings will lead to the end of racial differences.
