Subcultures as social collectivities/groupings: a subculture is a group of people with their own distinct culture, distinguishing and differentiating them from the dominant/mainstream culture and other subcultures. Subcultures" relationship to the societal mainstream: according to wheaton, subculture identity is individual expression of membership to a grouping which, at the same time differentiates the individual form other individuals, groupings, and the social mainstream. The dimensions of subculture and subcultural formations: mainstream society has views, values, and social groupings that are considered to be its norms (i. e. culture, lifestyle, politics, and religion). By becoming part of a subculture, you gain identities, values, and ways of alternatives of mainstream society. Insider/outsider subcultural status/membership: the more you express the things that define a subculture (class, age, music, ethnicity, religion, risk, style, generation, physical culture, etc. ), the more you become an insider and gain membership status.
