PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Axon Terminal, Myelin, Parietal Lobe
Document Summary
Psyc 100 - lecture 06 - biological foundations. Neuron: a type of cell responsible for sending/receiving signals throughout the body. Ion exchange changes the electricity of the cell. Build up charge within cell to hit threshold and send signal. Post signal: absolute refractory period, followed by relative refractory period. Dendrites receive signals from the terminal buttons of the pre-synaptic neuron. Vesicles containing neurotransmitters travel from the terminal button, releases its neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, where they travel to the dendrites of the post-synaptic neuron. The neurotransmitters fit into receptors on the dendrite and open ion channels. Ion channels open ---> positive ions lead to excitation; negative ions lead to inhibition. Broca"s aphasia - damage in broca area of brain. No words to support the ideas one intends. Wernicke"s area - production of meaningful language. Wernicke"s aphasia - damage in wernicke area of brain.
