PSYC 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Parental Investment, Evolutionary Psychology, David Buss
Document Summary
Evolutionary psychology: the study of psychological processes (cognitions, attitudes, and behaviors) through the lens of evolution and natural selection processes. Paternity uncertainty: causes a risk to men who are evolutionarily driven to pass on their genes. Investing in a child who is not biologically related= less time passing on your own genes. Parental investment: the time and resources devoted to keeping one"s children safe. Women may worry more about losing male parental investment and having less resources from a partner to help keep their children safe. Paternity uncertainty and paternal investment can be used to explain sexual and emotional infidelity. Study 1: men more jealous of sexual infidelity, women if emotional infidelity. Study 2: same results when looking at physiological signs. Study 3: men were only more distressed by sexual infidelity when they had experienced a committed sexual relationship.
