When nazis were put on trial they said they were only following orders a reason that many people didn"t like and thus dismissed. So milgram decided to test if the average american really wouldn"t act in a similar way to the nazis. Participants entered, under the guise that they would be shocking a person in the next room if that person got a question wrong simply because the authority figure said to. 2/3 obeyed through highest shock level (450 volts); 1/2 fully obeyed. Obedience declined in downtown connecticut office (when the participants knew the experimenters and authority figures were not affiliated with yale) There was a difference when the person was down the hall from the person who was being shocked wasn"t heard.
