Torn between two options, rely on what others will do as well to make your decision. When dealing with others as individuals, makes more sense to be selfish. People don"t want to deviate from the norm. Rewards/ incentives; altruistic punishment (the 0 points option) We define ourselves in terms of the groups we belong to. We use them as protection; as something to draw strength from. Patriotism & in-group pride -> buffer against social stigma & stress. Bask in reflected glory- associate with groups that are doing well. Groups are healthy, they help us define who we are. Gave groups a common problem and a common enemy. Presenting groups with positive information of competitors didn"t work. Even low prejudice people are aware of stereotypes. Stereotypes categorize because it requires too much mental effort to individuate . Create smaller groups within the larger, to make exceptions. Also for dominant/ majority of groups (e. g. christians)
