Historical background kanner (1943) blamed parents. Defining features: impairments in social interaction. Lacking in social imitation, sharing focus of attention, make believe play. Joint attention not present: impairments in communication. Those who speak may regress between 12-30 months. Children with asd who develop language usually do so before age 5. Different theories: craving for stimulation to excite cns, a way of blocking out and controlling unwanted stimulation from over-sensory environment, maintained by sensory reinforcement it provides. Associated characteristics of asd: intellectual deficits and strengths. Savants, splinter skills: sensory and perceptual impairments. Over-selective and impaired shifting of attention to sensory input. Impairments in mixing across sensory modalities: cognitive and motivational deficits. Difficulty in situations that require social understanding. Don"t understand pretense or engage in pretend play. Deficit in theory of mind: don"t understand false belief tests, general deficits. Executive functions higher-order planning and regulatory behaviors. Do well on tasks requiring focus on parts of stimuli rather than the whole thing.
