PSYC 330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Panic Attack, Panic Disorder, Exposure Therapy

11 views10 pages

Document Summary

When family doesn"t become involved in the treatment, the professional treatment is not useful. By teaching parents, like pcit, they become like an arm of the therapist. Parents are taught what kids are being taught and how they can set up more exposures outside of the session. Parents can learn how to give labeled praise. Older children (like lucy in the elevator) can be responsible for their own exposures at home. Evidence-based treatment for ocd: exposure with response prevention. The evidence-based treatment is called exposure with response prevention: exposure but the child is not allowed to react in the compulsive way, the compulsive reaction is supposed to lessen the child"s anxiety. Exposure in treatment of panic disorder tries to simulate those physiological sensations: spinning someone on a chair to make them feel dizzy, blow into a bag, make palms sweaty, blow into a straw. Feels exactly the same as panic attack for her.
