SOCY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Dalton Conley, Labeling Theory
Document Summary
This week during lecture we discussed deviants in society and how they are labeled and their roles in society. Our first reading this week was by dalton conley titled. The author begins by defining the difference between an informal and formal deviant and how society constructs the two. During thursday"s lecture we saw how the news painted a picture and confirmed a stigma between the black 7 year old reckless driving and the white 7 year old boy. My question is how come stigmas in labeling theory have become unconsciously (and consciously) people"s truth they believe all children brought up in certain surroundings must be characterized and generalized from others. Looking again at labeling theory the reading by william j. chablis"s the. Saints and the roughnecks clearly depicts the stigma of certain cultures. I have seen this first hand in my educating experience.
