BIL 160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Lonesome George, Herbivore, Parasitism
Document Summary
Giant galapagos turtle: lonesome george, no mammals on any galapagos islands, people came and took them to sell and drove lots to extinction, they aggregate in little pools of water. Moist air collects trees and drops down to form puddles: less forests now so less food and less puddles, pirates brought goats to the islands that ate so much food and ruined lots of the vegetation everywhere. Less forests for food and puddles for turtles. Conservation effort now to hunt and kill goats. Factors that affect distribution of species: biotic factors. Predation (turtles live on islands due to lack of predators) Mutualism (have to live with organism needed to live) Parasitism: abiotic factors (non-living factors that affect distribution of species) As climate changes, species range changes: species that have difficulty dispersing have smaller ranges and could go extinct. Dispersal is movement of individuals/gametes to somewhere else. Invasive species have range expansion: not limited by abiotic or biotic.
