BIL 255 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Aliivibrio Fischeri, Quorum Sensing, Autocrine Signalling
Document Summary
Signal transduction is conversion of one type of signal to another. Signal for cell to do something = respond. Cells share info for some of the same reasons we do. When cells first joined ranks to make organisms would have been the answer 10 years ago. But now we know about quorum sensing that occurred between bacteria. A group of cells experience an environmental challenge. Found in bacterial infection, form resistance plaques (a quorum sensing reaction) . One cell receives ahl then transmits it on and induce gene expression to produce more. At low density quorum sensing is off producing very low ahl . When bacteria concentrate, more ahl, form light (bacteria glow when densely aggregated) in a squid and the light in the squid is used to signal each other/ predators. Hormone circulates through blood and binds to a site- activates a process in the cell. Diffuse locally to adjacent cells right next to .
