Document Summary

Homeothermy: regulation of body temperature by physiological means. Mammals core body temp is 37 c. These can fluctuate over the day but are pretty much stable. Benefit of homeothermy is that we can have specialization at that given temp: poikilotherm might need to maintain several different molecular forms of enzymes to survive different temps. However homeotherms are pretty much stable so we can have optimization at this given temp. downside is that it is very highly metabolically expensive. Constant core temp despite variation in ambient temp. Means by which the animal is maintaining this temp is expensive so it requires higher metabolic rate. Upper and lower critical zones depend on species. Process of acclimation and acclimatization can affect those temps. Proportional to body temp and ambient temp: to difference, driving force for dry heat transfer, bigger the difference between the 2 the faster the transfer. Does not take into account evaporative transfer.
