Studios the major financially dependent instrument in motion pictures (indispensible) 2 basic functions of major studios: (first decade of 20th century: financing of films, marketing and distribution. Film launched at a time when american culture transitioned from agriculture to industry: large societies of people formed and there was dispensable money available to spend on movies. Everyone was contracted under the studios including: actors, writers, producers, set technicians etc. Audiences became more discrete/choosy about what movie they were going to (in. 50s) instead of just going to the theater to see whatever was playing. The real cost of movies moved to the high cost of special effects and not as much the big-name actors. America is the only country willing to spend the million + for the big summer movies (ex: avengers) Average movie goers are 15-25 years old. Studios are essential because they commit a lot of money to produce a movie.
