Document Summary
Oxygen in water has a partial negative charge causing it to be attracted to positive ions in solutes. Hydrogen in water has a partial positive charge causing it to be attracted to the negative ions in solutes. A salt solution conducts electricity, while sugar does not. Substances that dissolve in water to form solutions that conduct electricity are electrolytes. Substances such as nacl that completely dissociate into ions when they dissolve in water are known as strong electrolytes and they form strong electrolyte solutions. Most molecular compounds(with the exception of acids) dissolve in water as intact molecules. The polyatomic ion nitrate dissolves in an intact unit. The resulting solutions are called weak electrolyte solutions. It is because of this reason that they do not conduct electricity. They don"t dissociate into ions they dissociate from each other as molecules. These types of solutions that do not dissociate into ions are called nonelectrolytes.
