One defining characteristic of mass communication is its reliance on. Before technology people just used interpersonal communication and met up in large groups (ex: town meetings) Allowed for scholars to print and share their discoveries and theories. Placed new value on reading (as opposed to older oral traditions) Actually gave authors recognition for their work. Printed books produced a lot of profit. Photography made a breakthrough when joseph niepce found a way to capture and preserve an image on light-sensitive material. Movies: william dickinson developed the first movie camera, george eastman developed celluloid film, the lumiere brothers introduced projectors, and opened the first motion picture exhibition hall (movie house) 1895. The introduction of electricity transformed the media industry: spawned inventions including the light bulb, streetcar, phonograph, radio and then television. Phonograph was invented by thomas edison in 1877: first sound recording and playback system.
