ECS 111 Lecture 5: ECS 111 notes 10.1
Document Summary
Not enough rain can have just as big of an impact as too much rain. Dry lands occur where evaporation exceeds precipitation. Not enough rain falls to leave water on the surface. Very arid and dry areas tend to be poor areas. Developed countries are not immune to degradation but have more resources to manage soil erosion. Us uses so much water: mainly in irrigation and thermoelectric. Water cycle: continuous movement of water in the surface of earth. Are global water supplies sustainable: 1977 drought conditions were so severe in cali that outside residential water use was banned- lead to japanese invention of leaf blower. Water use patterns: 20% global pop lack access to safe water, 40% global pop lack adequate sanitation, 65 mill people around caribbean coastal waters everyday. Waste of water is endemic- leaking pipes. More than 200 rivers flow through more than 1 country same with lakes and aquifers.
