KIN 232 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Female Athlete Triad, Frontal Lobe, Anti-Gravity
Document Summary
Know how one can use renal mechanisms to cause a sodium deficit and water loss. Know the segments of the nephron and the key role of each: bowman"s capsule. Filtrates: contains jg cells for hormone secretion this is where kidney cancer would develop, proximal convoluted tubule, major site for reabsorption, contains the carbonic anhydrase enzyme for acid-base regulation. 66% of na+, 66 % of h2o, 50% of k+ and all amino acids and glucose (glut2 transporters: descending loop of henle (concentrating segment) Impermeable to ions but highly permeable to h2o: drives up the osmotic pressure in the ascending limb facilitating the flow of the filtrate, ascending loop of henle (diluted segment, not permeable to water but highly permeable to ions. Very common loop diuretics work here to block na+/k+ pump (aldosterone receptors). This leads to less na+ reabsorption and therefore less water reabsorption. Aldosterone mediated na+/k+ atpase pump lead to active ion transport for na+cl- reabsorption and therefore water.
