Document Summary

Central nervous system (cns) brain and spinal cord. Produce myelin, but if they are damaged, they shut off. Evolutionarily, the thought is that this is so that infection doesn"t pass on to brain. It has its own blood supply and system called the cerebral spinal fluid system. The blood/brain barrier protects itself from the rest of the body. Peripheral nervous system (pns) off of the spinal cord and can regenerate. Somatic: voluntary (but not exactly) skeletal muscles. Autonomic: involuntary, reflexive (but not exactly: sympathetic (sns): fight or flight, puts the body in a state of alarm, parasympathetic (psns): rest and digest, it will slow the body down and help conserve energy. Glial cells (look up: brain cancer is usually glial cells. Divergent: in a divergent pathway, one presynaptic neuron branches to affect a larger number of presynaptic neurons. Convergent: in a convergent pathway, many presynaptic neurons converge to influence a smaller number of presynaptic neurons.
