MSC 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Sea Level Rise, Ocean Acidification, Wind Shear
Document Summary
Tree-ring bsed estimate for se us from 1000ad to 2006. Tree ring records show the southeast is prone to droughts, and the 20th century appears to have been unusually wet by the standard of the last millennium. Green bars = wet, red bars = dry: future changes in precipitation. Projections show that south florida should show a drying trend due to hadley cell expansion: hurricanes and climate models, large scale conditions and changes. Size of grid cells on model not ideal for projections. This goes against (cid:498)world average(cid:499) of more precipitation. Factors that influence storm development and intensification. Embed regional models within global models: coral bleaching. Continued coral bleaching is likely to threaten reefs directly in the next few years or decades. Reductions in calcifications because of increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will make it more difficult for corals to recover. Not only environmental impacts, but economic too.
