CHAPTER 11 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION
What is Organizational Communication?
Positive org communication relates to job performance and satisfaction
“The social glue that holds organizations together”
The Communication Process
Sender (information source) → encoder (transmitter) → Channel (affected
by noise) → Decoder (Reception) → Receiver (Destination)
Sender: source transmission who selects a desired message out of
possible messages
Encoding: transformation of message into the signal, which is sent over
communication channel from transmitter to receiver
Channel: medium that transmits the message
Choice of medium affects attitudes and behaviors of the receiver
Decoding: receiver decodes the message by translating what is
seen/heard into understanding of the message
Affected by noise (any communication barrier that may affect how
a person interprets a message)
Receiver: person who receives the message; may be noise here also
Barriers to Effective Communication
Communication Apprehension: individual’s level of fear or anxiety with either real
or anticipated communication with another person or persons
Negatively related to both quality and quantity of communication behavior
To overcome this, recommend self-awareness and assertiveness training
Active Listening
Demonstrates moderate to high nonverbal involvement; reflects the
speaker’s message using verbal paraphrasing; may include asking
questions that encourage speakers to elaborate on his or her experiences
Communication Networks
Wheel
Communication flows through one person who is most likely group leader
Most centralized; facilitates leadership development
Circle
Each person can communicate with 2 others adjacent to them
Goes back to first person
All Channel/Star
More decentralized; allows free flow of info among all group members
Everyone communicates with everyone; if one person is missing, they
miss the whole message
Provides member satisfaction
