MIC 321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Memory T Cell, Adaptive Immune System, Adaptive System
Document Summary
Immunity is capacity to protect against infectious agents. Immunobiology encompasses role of immune system in non-infectious processes: eg. cancer, spleen is biggest organ of immune system, immune system is like chess. Each figure can do certain things and move certain places. Adaptive immune system kicks in if innate system leaves behind a pathogen. Adaptive system becomes smarter with practice, unlike the innate: adaptive system develops a memory using memory cells, innate looks old like the castle, adaptive is modern. B cells = like drones that secrete antibodies everywhere. Can hit the pathogen and put a shield over the castle. T cells = more like soldiers and have sophisticated mission and can infiltrate. Leave behind memory t cells after mission: intracellular and extracellular pathogens, slide shows innate strategies for dealing with both of these. 26: adaptive initiated by dendritic cell when it presents pathogen during draining by lymphatic system whereas innate response initiates at site of infection, extracellular adaptive response.
