Development--a process by which society changes (advances) in terms of economic factors & quality of life. Premodern/agrarian society--most people farmers, in military, a few other jobs such as grocer, shepherd, chief (through ancestry) Post-modernization--factory workers, entrepreneurs, part of more global economy, more impersonal government, state helps create infrastructure, social services, bureaucracy with more, qualified people can do more. Emerging markets: latin america, some se asia, singapore. Un(der) developed countries: nigeria, some african & middle eastern countries. Social development--access to health care/education longer life expectancy, lower infant mortality, higher literacy rates. Social equality--do both sexes & all ethnic groups share equally in quality of life. Sustainability--development is compatible with long-term health of the environment (ex: can you breathe, drink water, not destroying resources) Un hdi--un human development index looks at life expectance at birth, avg education levels & adult literacy rates, & standard of living (gni/capita ppp)
